The sixth part of the series.

Including excerpts from the symphonies of Elgar and Mahler.

THE STORY OF ELGAR'S THIRD SYMPHONY.
Elgar was commisioned a third symphony in the 1930's. Elgar started sketching out tunes and ideas on the piano. Soon, it was 1934, Elgar was on his deathbed. One of his death wishes was that, "not anybody should tinker with this symphony".
Elgar's deathbed wish was accepted until around the 1990's a composer called Anthony Payne came across the sketches Elgar had left and couldn't resist the passion of them. He requested to the Elgar family that he could finish the symphony. The Elgar family finally accepted and the new symphony was finally performed, fully orchestrated. What do you think Elgar would of thought of the symphony? Do you think it's in the style of Elgar?
Please leave your comments, It is nice to have feedback.

There are many fantastic symphonies by Mahler that have been left out, this is because of the time limit on youtube videos. I would of included the fourth, seventh and eigth if there was enough space.

Please rate and comment!
Enjoy!

  • Was here again to listen more to the third of Elgar, because you wrote something about that in the information.

As far as I am able to compare the original one and this one: I don't know the original one. But as an Elgar-lover, and searching for what could be Payne in it then I would say that it is some chords, very subtle, but strange. It can belong to the composition but Elgar is always very harmonious for me, but not there.

Do you hear that too, Daniel?

  • If you want to judge the piece, it is always best to listen to all of it, if you have not yet, because the there are many bits that are really harmonious, It is a fantastic piece, I really reccommend it to everyone!

  • Payne's work seems sound, but to stravinsky like...... if not that, than far to sparatic.

  • Don(t you know all the Romantic French Symphonies ? Franck, Chausson, Dukas,... are wonderful pieces, so different than Brahms or Bruckner or Malher ! you have to listen to this if you don't know, because I'm sure you'll love !

  • I love Mahler's 4th. Its so imaginative and creative. Even listening to the first few seconds of the 1st movement lets you know you're in for a ride

  • I love Mahler's 2nd!!!!

  • My favorite symphonies: Beethoven's 3,5,7,9, Bruckner's 4,6,9 Dvorak's 9, Mahler's 1,2,5,9,10, Prokofiev's 5,6, Shostakovich's 4,5,10,11.

  • can anyone tell me movement of a\mahler's symphony no.2? thanks

  • I first heard the Elgar/Payne 3rd Symphony on a transatlantic flight.

It was clear that certain parts of Elgar's work were more complete than others, and generally it felt like the ghost of Elgar, speaking to us through an orchestral ouija board.

But, certainly , it was a treat to hear, and Payne did a great job on it.

  • Nice to see that you've ranked Elgar 3 as a "real" symphony! There's been a bit of flak about the Elgar/Payne "elaboration" not being quite the ticket - I personally think it's superb, but let's not forget that if Elgar had completed the work it would've been an order of magnitude better still! Mahler's magnificent too, of course. That glorious theme - first cousin to "Abide With Me" - in the finale of the 9th: spellbinding!

  • The elgar symph no 2 sounds quite indebted to wagner though.
