Visible V8 @ 5000 RPM #3. This Renwal / Revell visible V8 goes over 5000 RPM several times and still runs just fine. This is 50 times faster than the original 1960 design.

Also I find it interesting that this little 1/4 scale model Styrene plastic engine does not want to go any faster than about 5200 RPM. This is close to the "magic" number 5252 RPM where torque and horsepower in any engine always cross. This engine of course produces no power, however it does require power to turn it. This may or may not mean anything, but I do find it interesting.

@ 5100 RPM this little engine is intense to be around and you can feel the energy. I give it plenty of space between me and it. Also the high noise level @ 5100 RPM is amazing for such a little plastic engine.

Driven by a Dayton 1/5 HP AC DC 120 volt external air cooled electric motor boosted up by a Variac to 135 volts AC to obtain 5100 RPM. Without the 135 volt Variac boost, it will only run to 4500 RPM.
It will not run any faster on this motor arrangement.
Also the electric drive motor must have external air cooling or it will burn up.
This little Styrene plastic engine requires a lot of drive shaft input power to run above 3500 RPM.

Update 6/17/2010: I am currently working on a new Visible V8 with improved lubrication for higher speeds with a longer run time.

  • at 2:28, the clatter, was that valve float?

  • @ChuddleBuggy No, it was the fan blades bending back and hitting the nut that holds on the crankshaft pully. Shortly after this video was taken, the fan blade broke off and flew across the room. I had to space it out for clearance and have not had a problem since.

  • how is that dirvin, I am blown away!

  • @66kerekes It is driven by an electric motor. Please see my other videos for details.

  • Is it a pressurized oil system and if so did it come like that? If not how did you pressurize it?

  • @dragbird79 There is a external oil pump used. This is a modified engine. See the Visible V8 block video for details.
