Here is my front porch tiled with natural slate stone tiles. Used 1/8" spacing and sanded grout. This is the cheap yellow Indian slate from Home Depot. It had uneven surfaces and size so I had to make up for the irregularities with mortar (thinset), grout and care. Be sure to seal before grouting as the grout will stick and soak in to the stone leaving a haze requiring hydrochloric acid (HCL) to clean. The water based acrylic stone sealer brought out all the color of the slate. The TileLab matte sealer is $30 a gallon but it sure did a nice job. I used two coats with a 2 hour drying time.
Tile-Lab recommends for protecting clay pavers, saltillo, terra-cotta, adobe, cement tile, quarry tile, slate and flagstone

  • Those are probably the most beautiful slate tiles I've seen on all of YouTube or in any store. The colours are just gorgeous.
