The world's most powerful laser, which can simulate the energy force of a hydrogen bomb and the sun, has been built in the US.

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California

Built in California and measuring the size of a football pitch, the National Ignition Facility (NIF) is the culmination of more than 10 years of work, at a cost of nearly £2.5bn.

Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are hoping a series of experiments will allow it eventually to mimic the heat and pressure found at the heart of the sun.

NIF consists of 192 separate laser beams, each of which is programmed to travel 1,000ft in one-thousandth of a second to converge simultaneously on a target the size of a pencil eraser.

The laser's power will be gradually turned up in a series of experiments over the next year, culminating at a power level in 2010 to achieve what scientists call "fusion ignition".

The power of laser

The tests will produce enough heat and pressure to fuse hydrogen atoms in a tiny cylindrical "target" so that more energy is released than is generated by the laser beams themselves.

It is also what scientists would one day like to achieve on a continuing basis to produce a clean, safe form of energy by fusing atoms instead of splitting them apart.

While the NIF laser is expected to be used for a wide range of high-energy and high-density physics experiments, its primary purpose is to help Government physicists ensure the reliability of the nation's nuclear weapons as they become older.

The laser "will be a cornerstone" of the weapons stewardship programme," said Thomas D'Agostino, the head of the National Nuclear Security Administration, a semi-independent arm of the Energy Department which oversees nuclear weapons programmes.

The NIF laser was proposed in the early 1990s, when the project's cost was put at just under £500m.

Building began in 1997 but the project's early years were marked by setbacks, including trouble in keeping its critical optics perfectly clean and free of dust.

Edward Moses, director of the NIF project, who has led its development since 1999, said he is ever more confident that NIF will achieve "fusion ignition".

"It's now operational," Mr Moses said. "The lasers are there. The targets are there, and we've proven the optics. But now the proof is in the shooting. We've got to put all this together and shoot the targets. It's the first time anyone has ever done experiments at this scale."

  • Who is to say that this technology won't be structured to be used against us by "them". Sometimes, as I watch the Illuminati work, it puts

me in mind of the John Carpenter movie "They Live". "They' have the money, the technology and the manpower to destroy mankind, as in breaking down our minds and bodies. I still have to check myself sometimes because I was so asleep for so long. The hold they have on the sheeple is so powerful. But, the tide is changing.

  • This is the the same pentagon group

    which own harrp.

some say that thislaser will be the real harrp

  • Oh, let's see, I could count three esoteric symbols in the NIF logo. And this technology will never come down to us because it would be free and limitless. We have to pay for the air we breathe out now, wait till they start taxing us for the oxygen we breathe in. And it's coming because they've bought the planet out from under us through fraud and deception and outright theft. Welcome to the Age of the Bankster.

  • TOTALLY correct.....

  • THIS IS THE CRAPPIEST THING EVER

  • In order to deploy anything like NIF on a battlefield, you would need to control enough of it to place all the laser source points around the field of battle. If you control enough of the battlefield where you can do that...you have effectively already won the battle and no NIF-like apparatus is actually necessary.

  • @JetMachMa

No need to be snotty and nasty about it, now. First of all, who said lasers have no potential be used as weapons in general? I certainly did not say that. But your examples tend to be from weapons (still in the testing stage, btw) which have a laser hitting a target from ONE source. That isn't how NIF actually works. NIF involves hitting a target from multiple sources of origin in the hopes of heating the target to hundreds of millions of degrees.

  • @MrDanP1: Do you really think you could carry that to the battlefield?

JM: For crying out loud....just search "Airborne Laser" and "Space based laser". Dude!....seriously. Educate yourself and get back to us....would you?

  • @sabasNL: And these errors are mistaken by it's own citizens sometimes.

JM: You can only think in terms of "errors" because the alternative....that their actions are intentional...is too terrible for people like you to contemplate. In short, you can't handle the truth. They know this, and they use it against you. Their actions are so audacious, that the average person can't get their mind around it. Can't accept evil on that scale.

  • @yourboycal I can answer your question. It's easy. Two answers: 1. Failing US politics and 2. Failing US Army. Now Chemtrails are easy to explain, as answer 1 and 2 are actually the reason why people believe in Chemtrails. The USA is a great nation, but the government makes quite some errors. And these errors are mistaken by it's own citizens sometimes. Globally, we call these citizens "US Conspiracy Thinkers".

  • This is pretty much bullshit. Why? Any modern technology can be used as weapon. The only way to be sure the government doesn't watch you is living in a cave without any means of modern technology. You consipracy thinkers, why do you actually even have the "Human-Killer", or as we know it, a PC? Why do you even have a "Global Spying Network" , called the Internet? There are some nice facts between the crap, but they are well-known and not even of any importance. Please see the facts multi-side.

  • found in starts which go on to become blackholes.

If you saw a youtube video about the space shuttle in development...you probably would have waxed paranoic about how that was going to be developed as "a weapon", as well. What would be the logistics of using it as a weapon? There is next to no range with the laser in NIF. The laser itself is contianed in the tube almost the entire journey to the chamber...Do you really think you could carry that to the battlefield?

  • OMG! This is some of the funniest bs I think I have ever read!

It is NOT a weapon. They already have fusion for weapons. As to the laser, it already exists, so to argue it is being developed for the sole purpose of weapons is just plain silly. This is not to say it will never be used as a weapon. But NIF is not for a weapon

As to the fear that it will create a black hole...there is not enough fuel to do that. The fuel is a small amount of Deuterium and Tritium...not the kind of amount

  • a star is the most powerful energy in the known universe.....LETS MAK ONE AWN EARF NAO! W IZ TEH SMART SAUZEZ....my biggest fear is that it would work.....for a while....till sombody fucks it all up and turns our galaxy into a fucking black hole
