  • Thanks for your comment ! Indeed Scotto and Bellini at their best! I have this on an old tape but I think this recording (as well as her Straniera in Venice 4 years later) have been commercialyy reedited.

  • An opportunity for me to mention again the exceptional clip you've posted of these arias with one of the heirs of the Scotto's inheritance: Lucia Aliberti!

  • Oh, I just love this opera. I have always loved it (Scotto, was and will always be my first choice, but Aliberti was also awsome!). I have another video, with an unknown soprano, who rips this finale apart. If I could figure out who the soprano was, I would post it on YT.

  • Well this is a challenge and love challenges I cannot tell you I will identify the soprano for sure (but others may and will certainly do so) but you should post that anyway... Any testimony of Bellinis less known operas remains very, very interesting!

  • Although Caballe's rendition is perhaps more perfect vocally, I prefer Scotto for its passion and drama and vocal power at the same time.

  • Me encanta!!! esta grabación en concreto. Aquí escuchamos a la Scotto en todo su esplendor. Frasea de manera especial y tiene mucha musicalidad. Me gusta la forma que tiene de articular los agudos, de manera gradual y no gritándolos como muchas otras sopranos...

  • @philipc67 I agree with everything you mention... and Fleming butchers a lot of bel canto.. primarily with her horrible musicality, and choices.. trying to interject jazzy singing, in a mileu.. not well suited to it. Fleming has a remarkable voice, but she really aggravates me in interpreting Bellini.

    qué os pasa a los fanáticos de la Callas, porque en todos los videos de todas las sopranos teneis que comparar con Callas? No sabeis escuchar la música sin más y emitir un juicio de valor sin comparaciones, o al menos sin que la comparación sea siempre la misma? No tengo nada en contra de la Callas, pero los que la seguís sois muy cansinos.

  • I wish I could learn how to upload on YouTube. As good as this is, the performance captured at La Fenice on Opera D'Oro finds Scotto in even more spectacular voice. Her final C# is absolutely spot on. The whole opera is better on the Opera D'Oro Fenice performance because Scotto is, in every way, superior. Read the review in Opera News by Ira Siff where he compare that Straniera to this one!

  • Fantastic, absolutely fantastic. Good coloratura, just the right amount of dark acid and "bite" in the voice, excellent diction.Together with Caballe, the best rendition of this very difficult final scene. Aliberti and Kabaivanska come a close second, Fleming butchers this scene and does not even enter the discussion.
