I was going through and remembered Mom telling me that she had put up some videos here on YouTube. It was really hard for me to watch this. But when I saw the comments I thought I should let you all know. Cynthia, the maker of this video and my mother, died in October 2007 from a brain aneurysm. Please remember her fondly for all she tried to do for others.

Thank you cynthia. It is about time someone explained the b.s. system in an understandable way!

I have forwarded your video to my nieces and nephews and look forward to your future segments. Thank you for offering this much needed service.

Have you already turned 24 or will you turn 24 in 2007? If so, exactly when in 2007?

24 on April 7th, i'm a transfer student.
Also, what really gets me is why I'm a dependent according to NYS if I pay rent, isn't there some way around that?

Because you turn 24 during the 2006-2007 FAFSA you are considered an independent student by the Department of Education. NY State should also accept that ruling, but they make the rules for who qualifies for their money. BUT there is a way around it. See next response.

What you need to do as soon as possible is contact the Financial Aid Officer (FAO) of the school(s) to which you are applying or attending. The FAO has the ability to override dependent-independent status. But you must fulfill their qualifications. Whenever in doubt about any part of the financial aid process, go to the FAO and ask. I hope this helps.
