I didn't mean I saw a correlation between religion and conspiracy theory, but rather creationism (and fundamentalism) and conspiracy theories. I do not have enough data on religious moderates and conspiracy theorism to make a judgement - religious moderates are not easy to detect; they do not advertise like the evangelical fundamentalists.
-
But I'm Catholic and I think these conspiracy theorists are complete dipshits, as do most of my Catholic friends. Even the priests at my church wouldn't believe that stuff (they haven't said so themselves, but after talking with them several times I can tell they're not stupid enough to believe conspiracies). I just don't see the connection between "religious" and "truther" at all.

There also seems to be a similarity in terms of method of spread. Creationism spreads by taking previous discredited arguments, refurbishing them, and regurgitating them. Plus an added dose of lying. More, they often have irreconcilably different accounts. I've noticed many conspiracy theories (9/11 being the one in my mind most of the time) work in much the same way.
Way to take fail to a whole new level. Your graph is meaningless since there is nothing to back it up.

Talk to Freedom0f5peech; it's his graph, not mine.

In general, I agree with your point that superstition is opposed to intelligence, but do you need to identify all religious people with fundamentalism? I am avidly religious and absolutely hate fundamentalism.
Fundamentalism opposes intelligence all the way, whether it be Christian, Muslim or whatever.
Nonetheless most scientists have historically been religious - a fact I'd document but I'm down to 96 characters and falling fast.

I do not identify all religious followers with fundamentalism - indeed, the vast majority of theists I know are moderates. However, it is this "moderatism" that provides a base for the fundamentalists, making them seem almost acceptable. Without the moderates, they could be designated as the mentally ill people that they are. Marcus Brigstocke makes a good point on this. Also, moderate religion can function as an intellectual copout - such as the first cause argument.
