  • i tired this on a computer... they countered it really easily. i would post a vid of it, but i don't have that fancy program of yours

  • @giglfoosm No fancy program needed. There are free programs out there to capture your screen with audio...the name escapes me.

  • @giglfoosm you can also post the game notation if you want.

  • I have played the Hippo a few times, and won a pretty nice game with it! I like it very much, it suits my style (or perhaps lack of style). Thank you for the wonderful lesson -- I appreciate your excellent commentary!

  • @Nulfinator Thanks.

  • I'm an old, novice player whose been bouncing around openings. Got your youtube from the UnorthodoxChessOpenings@yahoogroups. Played a OTB tournement last Saturday and used Hippo. Didn't win, but had fun. From your video, I see I need more theory.

    Great stuff!

  • @soldner55 Thanks!

  • Thanks for the video I play on red hot pawn you can see exactly when I started using this opening

  • In my opinion the Hippo is soild if played well but can go wrong even in the earlier part if not played accurately. Ive tried this in online games esp. blitz with good and bad results. It is also tactical once opened up. This opening perhaps suits to slow starters.

  • @giglfoosm i found this opening to be especially effective against computers, i dont play on a high level though. It's also known as the beginner's game. It basically gets you through the opening safely while the computer moves his pieces about aimlessly.

  • @megagagnon1 I have been playing this opening as white AND black, and my rating has been going steadily up! This opening suits my style wonderfully, because: 1) it is EXTREMELY flexible. 2) my opponents usually overestimate their position and try to force their way in, often with unsound sac's, and the counter-attacks I get are fierce.

  • I figure that after c5, then the idea for Black is a queen maneuver from d8 to a8, via Ra8 to a7, with the idea to defend the 7th rank. Thus, the black queen and the black fianchetto bishop would set up a battery along the a8 to h1 diagonal.

  • I have a question. If Black plays c5, then wouldn't that be a transposition to the Hedgehog defense?
