Jonathan 'DJK' Kim reviews the 1979 film 'Norma Rae'.

Norma Rae, starring Sally Field in an Oscar-winning performance, is one of the best movies about unions you'll ever see. It's the godmother of films about impassioned single moms who stand up to sexism and uncaring corporations to demand workers rights and corporate accountability. Erin Brockovich, Charlize Theron in 'North Country', I'm looking at YOU.

Field plays Norma Rae, a 31-year-old single mom living in a small southern town in 1979. She works in a textile mill under terrible conditions with little to look forward. But one day, a union organizer played by Ron Liebman arrives and inspires her to organize the mill workers so they can demand a living wage and fair treatment.

  • I recently joined a union and I can tell you that even during these hard times I still have a job with benefits. Americans need to ask their elected officials to pass the employee free choice act which will make it easier for workers to bring unions into the work place.

  • DivineAvenger, glad to see we still have sane people out there!

  • SOLIDARITY!

  • @frantic1971 -- Your right, but that's a sad commentary on the prevailing wisdom in Hollywood today. :0/

  • There was some REAL daring in Hollywood in the 1970's, as typlified by movies like this one. I mean...can you IMAGINE movie like this getting made today? Fat chance!

  • Sooo powerful!

  • oh and to keep your clothes from fading or bleeding colors to your skin. sort hard to do. however there are cheaper ways by using certain cancer causing chemicals that are banned in the us . not in china. you worry about lead on toys and dont even think about the chemicals on your clothes.

  • actually it was the passage of NFTA that killed the us textile industry.
