@jazzyslip What you're really missing is that yes, it is a minority that are racist, but that minority are people many would class as "traditionalists" and many of these "traditionalists" practice traditional Japanese martial arts.
I've been very fortunate in that all the people I've trained under have gone to painstaking lengths to make me feel welcomed, I was even a live-in pupil for a few months without charge.
That being said I have personally seen the other side of the matter.

Ha, that's pretty good.
The racism in Japan seems to have lessened in the martial arts...here I see a modern japanese kenshi going out of his way to help a black man- with "taekwondo" written on his back- stack up mats for a cut and at the same time is tolerating the language barrier (japanese people find it really annoying).
It's common for young Japanese to be interested in foreigners, but many traditionalists (usually old people) would lable you a "gaijin" and not let you into the dojo.
