In just 5 years after slavery had ended there were 13 African Americans elected to Congress. All of them ex-slaves, yet most were self-educated & held occupations such as ministers, attorneys, schoolteachers, and university presidents. Nearly all were state legislators. Every single one of them was Republican. It would take nearly 70 years before the Democratic party would allow an African American to hold office. CHECK ALL SOURCES!! EVEN THIS ONE. DO YOU KNOW YOUR HISTORY?
