Ripley's did a piece on the Yamakasi years ago around 2001. They are a parkour group in the south suburbs of Paris. They were the first parkour group and started off the whole parkour phenomenon but now members have left and others have joined. This clip is rare becasue I done it myself. Couldn't find it anywear.

**Update**

The old Parkour/David Belle - Free Running/Sébastien - L'art du Deplacement/Yamakasi arguments are arising in the comments area. There are also a few ridiculing them. Just keep in mind that these guys are a lot more ordinary then the other guys in ripleys and do something a lot more useful.

A comment which is good guideline

AndrewTraceur:

"Parkour is the discipline that David Belle founded, but the Yamakasi always say they practice "L'art du Deplacement". For example, take the underbars at 1:44; not completely efficient but still an expressive movement nonetheless."

I agree with this comment and it's accurate but I have heard David Belle say it's all the same thing I have also heard the yamakasi say it's all the same thing. They just call it diffrent names.

One thing which you can also note from the clip is that the yamakasi movement was a lot diffrent from the sterotypical parkour. There were none of the typical vaults that one would see in most parkour clips.

Here is a clip from an old zorro movie which clearly shows that parkour has been done before, 70 years before.

  • 1:43 their actual plan is to keep people from entering parkour.. "it should never under any sircumstances be attempted by armateurs" then how can you learn it? thumbs up if the people from Yamakasi should be the ones doing the commenting!

  • @hardcommunist : If you listen at the end, it's clear said that they won't show the dangerous moves. Look for Yamakasi's eraly videos and you will guys jumping from rooftops to rooftops, balcony etc ... And they still do this training after 20 years of pratice! In fact the documentary "Generation Yamakasi" shows better how they train and teach the "Art du Deplacement" (Art of Motion) other people which is close to Parkour and Freeruning. A good portrait of who they really are ...
