black death
When many think of the bubonic plague, the Black Death comes to mind. It is estimated to have killed 1/3 to ½ of Europe's population. But what many don't know, is that the disease still exists and has infects thousands of people worldwide every year. Historically the disease has been pandemic as well. It crossed several political borders and this lead several researchers and thinkers to question about how to prevent, cure and stop the spread of disease. At first, the large percent of sick and the high fatality rate made doctors (who were largely people of the church at the time) believe it was the devil's work. By the end of the Black Death, healthcare knowledge had been changed and we still use some of the practices that era developed.
The bubonic plague was at its peak when very little was known on how one could treat it, or any other diseases for that matter. The best guess by secular doctors was that it was made my "corrupt air". While this was not true, it by chance led to some advances in medical technique. To cure the plague people would try to make the air quality better. Flowers and other pleasurable scents were added to rooms in order to uncorrupt the air. While aromatherapy did nothing to cure the plague, a cleaner environment would. It could also slow the transmission of the disease. Dead or spoiling matter was removed from the property and this got the infected fleas away from healthy residents. By the peak of the Black Death, people with carts would walk the streets collecting the dead bodies. This lessened the spreading to almost everyone, except for the cart pusher who had quite a bit of risk involved in their job. Another advantage of the corrupt air theory was that giving the sick their own room isolated them from the other residents. This was a time where families existed in smaller houses. When one of them would get sick, they would get a room to rest and wouldn't be as close to those unaffected by the plague.
The bubonic plague is caused by a bacteria Yersinia pestis. It is zootonic and is predicted to kill 50%-90% of untreated cases. Part of the reason it is so aggressive is because of the system it affects. The bacteria targets the lymphatic system. This is devastating due to the closeness this system has to virtually all tissues in the body. By using this system as transport, it would then travel to the lymph nodes. Buboes will eventually form around the groin, neck and armpit area. In the early years of treatment, the buboes would be popped by hen feathers. There was no knowledge of sterilization at the time to realize the danger of this. With only ineffective treatments available, the patient would usually develop several gastrointestinal problems, sometimes experience otorrhea, and then become drowsy and die.
One of the most distinguishing characteristics of the plague is that it can cross freely across animal species. When infected fleas bite their hosts, usually a rat, it causes mass die-offs. The fleas would find a human host in the same area due to conditions of that time. Poor sanitation made rats and humans co inhabitants. Another distinguishing thing about the plague is its range. The plague can in infect the blood, called the septicemia plague. Its most devastating form is the pneumic plague. This form creates sputum, and that fluid can carry itself to a new host. It is extremely contagious and can spread without any contact with the plague spreading flea. Once infected, the victim usually dies within 36 hours and those that do not get treated is almost always death.
Prevention was pretty much the only response to the plague in pre-antibiotics era. But lifestyle changes resulted from the Black Death.
Well no wonder she was pissed, you said facts that aren't really facts. No she didn't authorize for wolves to be shot down for no apparent reason. She did that to protect the moose and caribou herds, which in Alaska you need to survive. They eat therefore they hunt. And second maybe you should have done research on what Sarah says she has read after the bad Katie Couric interview that she didn't want to give.Sarah has given on numerous accounts what she has read in the past year.Sarah ....

You said i said facts that were not true, yet you yourself said that she did in fact authorize the shooting of wolves. She did. She was asked the reading question and that WAS her responce. I dont care if later after thinking for hours she came up with an answer. She had a simple question, she failed.
