It was an early morning, waking up at 5:00am, driving to get breakfast at 5:45, and heading to Oakwood to start our trip north at 6. We drove through uncharted territory around White Sulphur Road, Cagle Road, and other places. The new Jeep was perfect for this. It handled every rainwater-caused rut in the unpaved, mountainous roads well in the midst of an annoying winter monsoon. None of the spots turned out to work, so we headed to Lula. After seeking shelter to watch Amtrak 19, the southbound Crescent pass, we hopped up onto the Southern Railway bridge to watch 237 come to a stop at Cagle, just to the south. The signalled an oncoming meet, NS 172 being the northbound that was holding up the mostly-baretable 237.
At 7:48am, 172 chugged into town. Its three catfish, NS C40-9Ws 9968, 9804, and 9738, led 80-or-so cars on toward Greenville, SC and eventually its final destination of Linwood, NC. This, however, did not signal what the day would be like. Don't worry--when the rain stopped, the good power showed up.
@altoonaPArailfan Thanks! Luckily, there's a railfan shelter here!
