Today, December 5, 2011 Dick Vitale returned the the University of Detroit for the dedication of a new basketball court named in his honor. He was scheduled for a press conference in Calihan Hall .... with television, radio and print media present... Vitale became extremely emotional... 30 years after his debut on the fledgling ESPN.. he proved why he was the magnet that drew NCAA basketball to national television audiences. While I came to get a headshot of Dick, it became obvious that no one's words could possibly convey the emotion and passion that this broadcaster, coach, and much more has delivered to sports and the public.Mike Alberts - El Central
Great video.

This poor guys' teams at Detroit routinely won 20-25 games a year, and couldn't even get invited to the N.I.T. How times have changed. Always liked him. Class act.

From a fellow Titan (I played baseball at U-D during the "Vitale Era"), I too was moved to tears listening to this and being there at the game. Vitale was so instrumental in putting University of Detroit basketball on the map back then, and his infectuous omni-enthusiasm and deep soulful passion was a beautiful thing to witness as it unfolded back then in front of our student body. He is indeed one of a kind - the AWESOME KIND, BABY!!!
