He was a master of sentimentality and wildly underrated. This was one of his best songs.

I absolutely love this song. I have great childhood memories of Paul Williams on Carson and Merv and Carol Burnett. A real jewel, he is.

I KNOW SOMEONE that does this song & he does it even better then paul

I remember this kind of weird-looking little dude. He used to do the Carson show a lot , and he had written a bunch of hit songs for other people. But , this one song just blew me away. I just remember that line "So , good night . I'll take my memories to bed..." That's not really anything that profound poetically or anything . What I mean is that line has been stuck in my head for nearly forty years. It was the only part of the song I remembered. Thanks for filling out the rest of it.
Hey, Mr. Trashcan, we are not talking about the same song. I bought the vinyl which my father had so many years ago. This is all acoustic. There is absolutely no disco-rock processing going on the song which I mentioned on an earlier post. Anyways, I will upload it and let you know when I do.

@kir3txsbcglobalnet I know the version you're talking about. I have the 45. I think it's awful, but maybe that's because I grew up knowing the original version. And I love disco music, but I think his disco version was a feeble attempt to revive the song which, in it's mellower version (the one I posted), only charted at #60. The disco version didn't chart at all--and I never heard it played on the same stations that played the original--not surprising.

He is such an underrated influence on the 70's music scene. Look @ his catalog of songs. This is his crown jewel & it is sad it never scored higher. I have the original single & the album. I just picked up a cd of his hits & the upbeat version of this song is on it. Too bad they didn't use this version.

@dmm3295 It's mind-boggling. I've heard him interviewed about his songwriting through the years, and "Waking Up Alone," his only charted hit, was never even mentioned.
