I think... the 'best best reason' has more to do with Professorship sponsoring. Its a bit of cascade, a professor incites his grads to do a certain research, other professors pick up that enhanced interest when one occurs and cause their grads to focus on what may be a burgeoning future industry, and a trend evolves... whether such a demand will materialize or not, is yet to be seen, CISCO may not for instance, go for nano-photonics beyond dispersion devices... then who will hire??
