Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world located at an altitude of 17,800 feet. It lies on the North Sikkim (India) in a high plateau area contiguous to the Tibetan Plateau. The stream emerging from the lake is one of the source-streams of the Teesta River.
The lake is named after Guru Padmasambhava. The lake remains completely frozen in the winter months from November to Mid-May except for one small part of the lake which is supposed to be touched and blessed by the Guru Padmasambhava.
Due to the extremely inhospitable surrounding terrain and considering the altitude, this place has scarcity of oxygen. First-time visitors are advised to stay overnight at Thangu (altitude 13500 feet).

this is beyond the Himalayas. the high mountain you looking at is actually south of you. so you have left the whole himalayan range behind you. if you go up further north it is all downhill and you will end up in tibet in hours. been there many times. even when it was raining cats and dogs up there it was all bright and sunny cause the clouds cannot cross those peaks. i walked around that lake. makes you tired cause of low oxygen. you must go and see this before it goes into the hands of china.

first delhi to bagdogra by flight. Then bagdogra to gangtok. stay one night there. then gangtok to gurudongmar lake by private car. there will be breathing problem for high altitude. best to visit to show snow falls and ice (feb - march). we treck there 01 week before.

Hastel free way is to fly to Bagdogra airport from delhi. There the flights form jet airways. Then take a chopper to gangtok from bagdogra which is like 25 mins. Then by car to Lachen or lachung I cannot remember what was it. That is like 6 - 8 hours drive and amazing scenic beauty. You have to stay there and next day you can visit this and come back within hours. You can hardly breathe there. It is so high.
