I really have to agree with everyone else: there is no actual mention of brands. He talks about new clothes, new kicks, & getting his car waxed. It's a cute song that, in my opinion, simply relates what a lot of guys are thinking about in the summer.

You seem like one of those people who has this inability to just enjoy life. You'd rather spend hours pointing out all the bad or negative things & you succeed not only in bringing yourself down, but those around you.

Stop it.

I actually enjoy life because I pay attention. If you did the same, you would notice that in addition to numerous consumer culture references (new clothes, new car, and having the right superficial image) that five brand names are mentioned in the lyrics: 0:53 Alpine speakers; 1:35 Jeep, Mercedes Benz, Nissan cars and Lorenzo tires.

Will Smith is not the only one to do this, and certainly this sort of embedded advertising is not limited to hip-hop: its everywhere!

Fair enough. I forgot about the Nissan and Lorenzo stuff. I still think it's pointless for you to get so bent out of shape about it. If I take your logic, I'm advertising for Chevy every time I get in my car. Don't hate on this song. It's a classic, and just the opening 10 seconds are enough to make everyone think back to a summer when things were far more simple.

I'm not bent out of shape. I just have a different taste than you do I guess. Am I not free to prefer music that does not include name brands and advocate consumerism? What do you think of the Dead Kennedy's music?

I don't know, the only Dead Kennedy's song I've ever heard (that I know of) is in a guitar hero game. I prefer rock music to rap myself, for the past few years I've been particularly into The Killers, My Chemical Romance, and Kings of Leon. Regardless, I just don't see how you can slam this song for a few brand names when it's clearly one of the best songs of the 90's.
