By shifting the position of the hands back towards the waist you can really increase the difficulty of a press up. It can in fact be a progressive stage in the development of a full planche press up which is a press up like this but WITHOUT your feet on the floor! Yes, a hard one to master!
Having your hands further back really places a lot more emphasis on the front deltoids (shoulders) and triceps.
1) Lying face down on the floor place your hands as far back towards your waist as you can manage.
2) Keeping your body straight and tummy held tight push upwards until your arms are straight.
3) Lean forward as much as you can.
4) Lower back down to starting position
To progress on from these try removing your shoes and placing the tops of your feet on the floor rather than your toes. This way when you press up and down your toes should slide forward and back on the carpet or floor. If you lean far enough forward and have enough strength eventually your feet will lift off the floor and a full planche press up will be achieved!
This exercise places a lot of stress on the wrist joints so to make it more comfortable you can try doing them on a pair of press up bars. You will get a deeper range of movement too if you use the bars.
@downrightdirteh Yeah, I'm sure. I think I just need to work my upper back some more. I've strengthened my back quite a bit since I posted that comment.

@CantNoScope I don´t think so. Are you really holding your back 100 percent straight?

Doing these really works my upper back, is that normal?
