Sounds to me like you don't know what you talk about. One of the strengths in Linux is that is has no native user-interface.
No, the textbased stuff isn't Linux either, Linux is only a kernel, the textbased stuff is a process connected to the kernel afterwards, just like the graphical user-interface.
It makes Linux more flexible and possible to use in situations where systems like Windows would be impossible to use.
Love Windows if you want to, but don't crap on that you know nothing about.

Ubuntu works on a mac (I've tried it on a G4). It was immensely hard to do (because of the mac firmware), and once I got it working there were graphical and sound issues.
If you want to test linux, try portable versions, or even buy an old PC. Linux system requirements are very low across the board :)
