True, but for people in general the late 19'th century was a very optimistic era. New inventions made life easier and safer. Medical progress and education was getting available for more and more people. Many scholars believed mankind had reached new hights of "civilization" and that the 20'th century would be so technically advanced that there'd be no wars.
I guess World War One ended all those illusions. The shockwaves of that resonated all the way through the 20'th century

Very astute observation, Alex. A time of polio and belted sanitary napkins, to be sure, but still a wonderful time, if not perhaps THE most wonderful...

Because it was the time of her youth.

the late 1800's seemed like a romantic and interesting era
the french lady which died at the age of 122 in 1997 always said the best timeperiod in history was in the late 1800's
