This tune was composed and originally performed by Bill Withers. It was released in 1972 and made it to the #2 spot on the Hot 100 Billboard Chart. My cover is not exact in that I did not use straight 1/16 notes on the h hat but rather kept with my own natural feel & groove. Drummer James Gadson used straight 1/16 notes on the hi hat and alternated beats between the bass drum and snare in paraddidle type sequence. This drum cover video is intended for the purposes of education, comparison and critiquing.

  • Oh, this sounds difficult, right Nick ? I mean the shifted rythmyics ...? Sounds interesting ! Cool drumming my Buddy ! Karen :-))

  • @karenmuenchen Thanks Karen. A fun one too drum. Mainly just keeping to a groove. You rock !!!!

  • Awesome control of the high hat on this one Nick, you really nailed it. Did the thin ice break? i see you're using a different snare. I love all of these old tunes you are covering - it is so good to hear them again... lot's of memories. If the ice broke you have to post a picture!

  • @FL50DRUMR LOL...no it didn't break...I wanted to use a higher rim so I pulled the '69 Rogers out of the case. The crap snare I use with the crap set hardly has any rim height. I put the thin ice snare back on the crap stand. LOL..you can see the snare moving quite a bit. I am planning to set up the '69 Rogers in a spare bedroom and put some acoustic panels in the room. That is where I would like to to do my recordings. For now the basement will do.

  • It is a cool song Brian. I may do another version and play the hi hat at the consistant 1/16 beat it is in the studio version. I didn't realize that was the way it was played until I read about it. Of course I didn't read about it until after I recorded and uploaded the cover. Thanks for checking it out my friend !!

  • @readyeddy101 I like the look of the snare stand moving, it is natural for a drum set to move, vibrate, mine will move when I double pedal, rim shots or heavy rolls. I keep losing the screws for the bottom of the snare, as I cut open the bottoms to reduce the ambient sound, but I wanted to keep the rims in place so I don't damage the bearing edges so I need resonant heads - well basically the rims in place for the hoops to mount . The screws come undone - once every 3-4 days or so.

  • One of my favs.
