For the people who drove there, what do you think ?, could I drive it on my own with a Niva or do I need a georgian driver ?

Well, road terrible: they told us the one to Omalo is much worse. However, also the driver needed to ask few times the right direction.
It's a long road: we needed more than 5h to go there, even if it's not so far from Tbilisi; however, we stopped many times because the places are just amazing.
If you are a group, taking a marshrutka (the mini bus) with a driver I think is the best solution (we were 8). Anyway, you need to wait Summer, because in Winter the road is not accessible at all.
