@unworld Our original goal was to bring forth "economic empowerment" to local & community businesses. The key problem we ran into was just a deep reluctance to step outside the box.
Flyers at the local BBQ, sure. Posters at clubs/venues/churches, fine. But the minute you begin talking about Split-Testing, PPC, Media Buys (even on a radio/tv level was pulling teeth).. it all starts going downhill.
As a marketer, it becomes too grinding to have to convince clients of their OWN online benefits

this new local businessess buzzz going on in internet marketing is bs people will say anything to get you to buy their products i have subscribed to multiple "gurus" newsletters and they all promoting the same products i think the only way to make money in affiliate marketing is off of other "affiliate marketers" by creating products

Ian, you hit the nail RIGHT on the head. My wife and I invested over 4 years and at least $30k into integrating local business with the online world. And this was in Baltimore, MD (very poor choice in location, lol).
Very similar to your experience with Jersey mom & pops. It was a mix of both ignorance and aversion to marketing as a whole.
We are now OUT of that market as consultants & marketers. Too many local shops don't even have money issues, it's more of an Ideology issue.
