My video identifies the close relationship between amateur digital producers and big media production companies. Spoofs of amateur videos on television depict the definite influence that amateur video has on these media productions.
We are no longer a passive audience. We actively seek media for our own satisfaction. Media production companies must become innovative and adapt to changing times in order to maintain viewer ship; and they have.
Media production companies are attempting to take back their audiences attention through what appears to be amateur digital production. This video explores big media posing as amateur digital production through examples such as lonelygirl15 and Bride Wig Out. Both are advertisements disguised as amateur videos; one for a television series, the other for Sunsilk hair products.
Using these and other examples, this video explores how advertisements use amateur digital productive appeal to encourage us to watch them again and again. The concept of amateur productive appeal is also depicted Weezers Pork and Beans video.
Is appropriation still subversive if big business throws it back? Is media production jamming our own culture?
In the competition for views, the amateurs have to become more professional in order to maintain their presence and funding. YouTube has invited members to become partners, in which advertisements will be placed on their video channels and pages. Advantages include: quicker search results, coming up in related videos, and recommending your video to others. However, if the internet is creating an alternative communication system which is separated from both state and commercial control, than YouTube is not the alternative.
As outline in my video and The Empire of Mind, what type of future we arrive at through the emerging public sphere entirely depends on what we do with it.
