If you're like most Americans you're consuming more sodium in your diet than is recommended. Excessive sodium intake can lead to high blood pressure and exacerbate conditions such as congestive heart failure and chronic kidney disease. It's advisable that you restrict your daily sodium intake to about 2 grams a day or less. That's about the equivalent of a teaspoon of table salt. Ways to limit your sodium intake start with throwing away your salt shaker but also to eat more fresh foods and less processed foods which often use sodium as a preservative. Get in the habit of reading labels to keep track of the amount of sodium your eating and to identify lower sodium alternatives. Using a combination of citrus, herbs and spices can also eliminate the need to use sodium as a flavor enhancer. Good luck and happy eating.
