First movement of this beautiful and challenging work (BWV 1032) performed in Makati, Manila, in January 2008 by myself and David Johnson (flute) as part of the Clarion Chamber Ensemble concert. The first movement was rarely played for a long time because of its incomplete state (someone cut up Bach's manuscript losing possibly forever a large part of the second part). This uses a reasonable reconstruction, although I may one day try one myself. The movt is laid out an energetic but tight dialogue between flute and harpsichord laid out in virtuostic concerto fashion, with expansive ritornellos. I find it more accessible than the great B minor sonata, but no less tricky to play. I was fairly nervous coming on to the stage, especially as this was our first public performance of the work together. Harpsichord is by Manila based German Nikolaus Damm.

  • is that real score? I have other version. From CD sheet music...

  • Thanks for the query. Only about two thirds of Bach's first movement survives. Therefore, the rest has been reconstructed by various people. The version I used was the Hans Eppstein reconstruction.

  • great performance!

which edition did you play? who's reconstruction is it? it's different from what i have, and i like it a lot!

  • Thanks for your praise. The edition was Henle edited by Hans Eppstein, grouping the four "authentic" flute sonatas. The reconstruction is quite good, although I find his continuo realizations cluttered and overfussy.

  • Wonderfull sonata and performers, thank you forposting it. And post many more, you can do any.

  • Glad you liked it. Hoping to post more from this concert soon including trio sonatas by JS Bach and CPE Bach, plus new performances coming up.

  • Had another couple of views - marvellous. Your Bach always was red hot, ever since I heard you play the 2 part invention in G many years ago whilst you were sneakily having lessons with that the talentless broad on Childwall Road: Mrs Patterson. Any more lined up? I suspect you're too busy to email these days? Vladdegs!

  • Fantastic playing Gra. I only wish I could do more 'serious' videos!!! lol. Is it your h'cord? D.
