The Israeli film "Footnote" has been shortlisted for an Oscar for best foreign language film. The film was directed by Joseph Cedar and is among nine films still in the running for the Academy Award. The film is about the rivalry between a father and son who are Talmudic scholars and has already won best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Cedar is not new to the Oscars, and his film "Beaufort" about the Israeli army's withdrawal from southern Lebanon was nominated in 2007. Despite having a small film industry, Israel has had nine films nominated for foreign language Oscars since 1964, which puts Israel in the top ten most nominated countries. Four films will be dropped from the shortlist of nine, and a final list of nominations will be announced on January 24th.
