This is the first of our 2 part video for detailed instructions on how to tie the ever popular and very effective Bead Head Woolly Bugger. This fly is the first pattern we teach in our Beginner Fly Tying Class at CrossCurrents in our Helena, Montana store. CrossCurrents ties their Woolly Buggers in a very durable way using a wire rib. This fly is tied by Chris Strainer, Owner/Manager/Instructor at CrossCurrents.

Thread- 3/0 (color to match body)
Hook- #2-#12 4X Streamer Hook (i.e. Daiichi #2220)
Bead/Cone- (optional)
Weight- .020" - .035" Lead or Tin Wire (optional)
Tail- Marabou & Krystal Flash
Body- Chenille
Rib- Copper Wire (XS or S Ultra Wire)
Hackle- Rooster Saddle

  • huge waste of maribou

  • A good time for a rotary vise. I used to use the wire as well until I realized i always lose them before the hackle unwinds, so why bother.
