I love Olivia Williams's portrayal of Jane Fairfax. She gives the character the perfect amount of reserve and steel, and you can at once understand why Emma thinks she is too reserved while also feeling inferior in other ways.

I agree. O William's acting is brilliant. She is incredible. We feel her pain and she is a well rounded character.

I think it's more of money is good then love is blind. Money can make a puppy out of Mr Elton. That's all there is to it.

She sounds American, but I remember nothing in the book about her coming from there, on the contrary.. I supposed they did it to emphasize her "crassness"

I never heard that there was an English accent that sounded "American" Actually... not American. Canadian, which is distinctly different, we speak more crisply and don't flatten our vowels as much. Maybe more so in BC where there are a lot of British ex-parts. I had an English friend with a Canadian Mom who kept her accent but no one in England noticed. Her son thought it was posh.
