This is "H.A.T.E." for the Amstrad CPC released in 1989 by Vortex Software.
It is an isometric shoot 'em up very similar to Zaxxon.
You control either a fighter plane or a tank and your purpose is to destroy the reactors and collect the power cells that are left behind.
The power cells are useful at the end of each stage where there is a barrier that you can only pass if you have at least one power cell.
If you don't have a power cell you lose a life.
Of course, to reach at the barrier you have to survive different enemy waves trying to destroy you.
If you take a hit while carrying a power cell your plane or tank is not destroyed but you lose a power cell.
And that's all about it. It's quite simple but addictive enough game.
The game is also granted a smashing tune created by Ben Daglish!

  • Woah - when you died it sent you back 2 levels?

Nice vid and game ... never played it before, marvelous music but a little too slow perhaps.

  • @Xyphoe No, only one level back.

The level is indicated in the box right above the word "SCORE".

Yes i think they could have made it a little faster.

  • I know this game on the cpc and amiga. Very good music on the cpc. Great video mate.

  • @alex76gr That's my point exactly - 99% of CPC games were Spectrum ports, so the CPC was never fully utilised to its full potential, whatever it could have been - the remaining 1% are actual PROPER games (usually CPC exclusives).

  • @alex76gr That might not be a bad idea - redo it with new code for the CPC :) I tried to remake this game for the Sega Master System to make use of the SMS's capabilities - got as far as remaking the music and graphics. I dropped the project.

  • @SPeacock Yes this might be the reason, but don't forget that CPC's version is just a port of the Spectrum's version.

If they had written new code for the CPC's extended capabilities we would now had a whole different game.

  • @macdeath69 The AY music was the very reason the Amstrad CPC version of the game was slow and laggy as shit.

  • It's a bit slow and uncoloured because, well...speccy ported...

But was great despite this : sweet music, and graphics weren't that bad, only uncolored...

Many CPC users put the game on just to listen to the music...

  • the game wasnt particularily fun, but the music is one of the most awesome tunes ever composed on a CPC. I remember I prefered not to play and just listen the music, because when playing your shots muted the bass :S:S
