Using my Yaesu FT-1500 to listen in on the ISS as it passes over the USA on MAY 2, 2011 at about 4pm. I passed my TECH exam but am awaiting my license call sign so NOT TRANSMITTING for me but I still like to listen. NO VOICE was heard this pass, just PACKET.

  • @red88ization The license is what shows that you took and passed the tests to HOPEFULLY ensure that you know how to PROPERLY and COURTEOUSLY and LEGALLY operate. There are plenty of stories our there of people being unlicensed or licensed NUISANCE operators that have been final BIG and had their gear taken.. and been banned from operating for years. Just remember... people are listening and KNOW the rules.

  • @red88ization Amateurs are issued a call sign that you MUST be given every 10 minutes and at the END of your transmissions (when signing off). If you don't have one you can't do that. If you try to make one up you'll most likely get the format wrong and the HAM community will know, call you on it and report it to the FCC. If you continue to operate without a license your transmissions will be tracked and they will issue a VERY heft fine and possible confiscate your equipment.

  • what happens if you tx with no licence

  • @monosodiumgiftonat Don't know if I will ever get to contact the ISS as they are FAR less active than Doug Whelock was and all I have seen so far have been scheduled school contacts. I am currently trying to get the new ARISSAT-1 audio, SSTV and BPSK signals. Good luck with you contacts as well.

  • 7weeks? holy cow! it took a bit more than 3 weeks for me and that was at least 3 weeks too much :) but finally i got my callsign (cept license) and now i am after the sats. have to look for some kind of rotor control and stuff. build a 2m GP of wire and got nothing from the ISS or ARISSat-1 :( my arrow works well for that but not too nice to work without a rotor.. need to look for some mobile equipment wich also looks to work great! hope you get the iss or any other sat soon!

  • @monosodiumgiftonat It took 7 weeks to get my call due to an error by the examiners. I've upgraded to General class (just 5 days after receiving my call sign). For the video I was actually using a Wilson Lil Wil 5/8 wave mag mount antenna on my vehicle. I was surprised how well it work for ISS contact. I hope to build an arrow soon. I was not able to make contact with the ISS during any of the passes that I have received voice transmissions as they have all been prescheduled school contacts.

  • hope you got your callsign long time ago. passed my cept 1 over here in germany nearly 3 weeks ago and still waiting for my callsign. frustrating.

what type of antenna do you use for the iss? i built myself an arrow antenna (google for DL3RTL arrow if you want) which works gook for satellites and the iss. did you manage to reach the iss?
