Benjamin Gray, analyst from Forrester Consulting, discusses the critical role of mobile device management and mobile security in your business' mobile strategy. SybaseInc is the leader in mobile security software solutions and mobile device management software.
For folks that arent familiar with Forrester Research or specifically my role within the organization, Forrester is an independent technology research firm. I sit on the IT infrastructure and operations research team. My role on the team is I try to cover as much of mobile operations as possible from the perspective of IT operations. That is the role that I serve. So I own a couple demands. I own things like things like mobile device hardware, mobile operating systems and mobile device management. I gotta tell you that this is a really exciting space to be an analyst covering these technologies. Mobile device management, mobile security, we're getting absolutely crushed with client inquiries even consulting engagements to assist organizations supporting this increasingly distributed and mobile workforce. So Ill actually be speaking to specifically, the critical role that mobile device management and mobile security plays in your businesss mobile strategy. Mobility is really a top priority and Ive got lots of data to sort of highlight that. Over the last couple years mobile device management and mobile security solutions have really matured very rapidly to a must have solution for any organization that wants to centrally manage their increasingly mobile devices, manage their increasingly heterogeneous devices and to do it cost effectively and efficiently. And coming out of the survey are some major trends. First of all wireless network use is absolutely proliferating. Devices are also absolutely widespread. We've all seen the forecasts of smart phone shipments over the last couple years; its just through the roof. Applications are being mobilized. Thats another significant story that Ill tell as part of my presentation. And then of course policy management are really the top priorities as a result of all these trends. Firms are not really keeping pace with a twofold strategy around mobile device management and mobile security. Building your businesss mobile strategy should really have three goals; the first is to reduce risk, the second is to define a really clear technical road map in a very mobile technology landscape, lastly of course it's all about enabling new business processes and efficiencies. So any successful mobile policy should really have three key elements; the first of which is a mobility framework, the second is a security policy and the third is the device management and support. Top ten mobile device management, mobile security best practices to come out of these user interviews. The first of which is enable device a diversity, enforcing strong password policies, remotely locking and wiping all lost or stolen devices, automatically wipe devices after ten or so unsuccessful authentication attempts, encrypt the data, enable support for dual usage models, manage all devices but limit the data stored on unmanaged devices. So in a perfect world youre gonna manage all devices. Avoid the company logo and display a telephone number on the locked state of the device. By utilizing a single Web based console for all your mobile device management and mobile security needs. And finally the last and best practices provide multi channel training and links to additional resources.
