I first went to Haiti in 1975 with my husband, Bradford Graves. We went during Holy Week - the days between Holy Sunday and Easter - which is also the time of Rara.
We also were able to attend several vodou ceremonies and were permitted to record.
The vodou ceremony we recorded was released on Folkways - VODUN: RADA RITE FOR ERZULIE - HAITI, Folkways FE 4491. 1976 and now available on Smithsonian Folkways.
I returned to Haiti in 1976 and 1977 accompanied by Ramon Perez and we continued to record Rara and this was also released as RARA IN HAITI - GAGA IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC,
Folkways 4531. 1978 - also available now as a CD on Smithsonian Folkways.
I produced a short 15 film on Rara for the Brooklyn Museum/

  • Some people are incapable of understanding another culture. Everything should exist only within their context. I have a difficult time understanding how thousands of priests within the catholic church can take advantage of children, and for catholics to consider it normal. How many countries have catholics gone into? Under the pretext of converting people into christianity, they have mistreated people less fortunate than they. The catholic church is evil, and its priests are Satan's spawn.

  • Why so much Hatred!?
