  • After getting the HPFP recall done and the replacement of all "bad" injectors the sound is gone. I know direct injection motors can sound odd at idle, I also have a 2.0t A4 that has a different idle sound. If the sound has gone away since replacing the injectors that were considered "bad", that tells me the sound that I had was abnormal.

I recommend urging your dealer to check what injectors you have to see if they are the "bad" ones and have them replaced.

  • I have a 2009 335i xdrive coupe and my car does the exact same thing. I bought the car brand new off the show room and it had the same engine noise the very first time I started up the car. The dealership explained to me that the N54 is noisy upon initial start-up because they have extremely high pressures with their injectors. The rattle you hear is coming from the waste-gates which are valves associated with the twin turbos. Don't worry your N54 is built tough.

Thanks for the info! Got the car back yesterday and they said this is "normal".

  • have the same shit sound at start up - _-´

  • That is just the injectors. Modern vehicles are now equipped with direct injection which makes more noise than with the conventional injectors which are bolted to the intake manifold. These new injectors have very high pressure hence the rattling noise. Makes you feel it sounds like a diesel. But once you start driving on the highway you will not notice it.

  • Sounds normal for startup.

  • @djmixmac I am fully aware of the repeated failures with the pumps. All in all, there are a total of 6 attempts of getting it right. There have not been any failures since with the latest pump.

  • @phv628 HaHa, tell that to the thousands of people who suffered from the HPFP Failure and still had the issue after they replaced it!

    No thanks!

  • @ShutterFlick

I am glad that you took it in for a check. Gives you peace of mind! :-)

  • If you notice long cranks upon start-up. Long being around 2 seconds and longer, be sure to take your car in to have the HPFP replaced. I had my HPFP replaced a few months ago and my car starts instantaneously now. Your N54 has won "international engine of the year" twice. No need to worry!
