Incredible color footage of the Battle of Iwo Jima

An Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary, this 20 minute Technicolor production unfolds with graphic energy the nearly month long battle for Iwo Jima, a volcanic island lying 700 miles southeast of Japan, in which 20000 Japanese and nearly 7000 American fighting men were killed, a struggle eternalized by Joe Rosenthal's photograph of five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising a giant U.S. flag atop 550 foot high Mt. Suribachi, cinematically captured here in this well-edited (by Warner Bros.) effort.

  • My favorite scene of this hellish battle is the flag raising at mount suribachi. But 2 to 3 more moths of hellish battle was left to clean the japs off the island. If it wasn't for these brave men we the u.s. would not be free today. God bless the marines and all the brave men who fought and died for our freedom!

  • @sjk187 Yes most people think that the flag was raised and the battle was over!

  • 2:36 thats insane you practicly hear your death coming.

  • @steamplayer716 What's really insane is the cameraman died filming that footage. You would think that the carnage of WW2 would have ended conflict for all time. However, bottom line is humans like violence.

  • 6:07 is an awesome display of hellish power of flame thrower. Devil's weapon of choice.

  • Practically, once you start hearing the sound of the shell falling, you have less than 2 seconds to take cover before it blows up on top of you. What you do in that less than 2 seconds could mean life or death for you. Intense reality!

  • Strank, Block and Sousley died on that island

RIP to all who fought and died in that hell
