This presentation examines the life of an African American Chaplain during World War II through an analysis of his mandatory, periodic reports, as well as the letters which he wrote home from 1942 to 1945. By exploring his letters and his Chaplains Reports - both within the context of the oral history interviews with his surviving daughter and charter members of 2nd Baptist Church of Patterson, New Jersey the lecture addresses several themes regarding military veterans of the 1940s.The Lord Has Called Us to a Hard Task: Chaplain Robert Dokes, Black Soldiers, and The Practice of Transgressive Citizenship in World War II.Provost Lecture Series by Professor George White (Dept. of History & Philosophy)
