We (WVMMGH)investigated Lakin on SEPT. 21,22,25,27,29 2004 and
OCT.1,2,6,11,21,22 2004. This is a small sample of some of our favorite evps and some interesting photos from there.

We collected over 100 evps, and had many experiences while there, such as:
Hearing footsteps, breathing, moans, bangs and crashes, screams, voices, other unexplainable sounds

*Being touched, poked, pushed, having clothing etc. pulled on, hearing our names being said on some of our recordings (EVP'S)

*Seeing shadows, seeing one of the stairwells "light up and move down the steps"

*Three of our investigators went to Lakin one night, and as soon as they entered the back entrance, it sounded like 15-20 "people" talking right in front of them, but no one else was in the building but them....

Sadly, Lakin was demolished in November 2006. This place was extremely active.... and very haunted.

Lakin was built in 1924 in Mason, WV, with the aid of African American legislators T.G. Nutter, Harry Capehart and T.J. Coleman, who also established other facilities and were run by African-Americans during the era of segregation; hence, the name, "The Lakin Industrial School For Colored Boys."Lakin was a reform school for African-American youth. Most staff and boys worked on the surrounding farm. The industrial school was in operation from 1924 until 1956. The hospital for the insane was located across the road from the industrial school. Though some pieces of the old hospital remain, the majority of it was later torn down and the Lakin Nursing Home now stands on that site. However, there has been much speculation as to what all went on at Lakin. Could it have been part of the hospital as well? For instance,on the third floor there was a large trough like structure. Many claim that this is where they performed lobotomies and electric shock treatments. There is also a story about a nurse who was shoved from behind and fell to her death on the basement stairs. After Lakin closed its doors in 1956, the property was claimed by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services until 1976. At that time, the West Virginia Department of Agriculture the inherited it. In November 2007, the American Electic Power Company purchased the property. It was the AEP's river operation's facillity who purchased the property to expand their development. They tore down Lakin, and it no longer stands.

  • i have experienced some ghost or spirit activity first hand , as one of my past homes was haunted by someone or something. i had knocks on my bedroom door when i was alone, cold chills out of nowhere, cabinet doors closing on their own, doors shaking, footsteps heard at night, and after my home caught on fire , we took some pics and there were lots of orbs and shadows in the pics of the outside and inside. and one pic was something in the shape of an indian chief face with headress.

  • wish I would have stayed longer when I visited this place!

  • The name of the complex is enough said really...thanks for your efforts quite sad all round..even before the ruination of today...

  • omg, that was really scary and weird . That really looked kinda like a asylum.Did you find anything there like papers, files, etc?

  • i live in wv, many many many ghost tales

  • Lol I went in there before they shut it down.. i stole a peace of a toilet that someone smashed. People have partied in there and there is so much grafitti it's rediculous. However, even in broad daylight, the 1st floor was scarier than the 2nd..and it was too creepy to go to the 3rd. I'm kind glad they tore it down. It prolly had snakes and crap and there's a house like right next to where it stood.

  • hi chell,

nice vid! The dead seem to have much to say to you.

    hugs,

    steve

  • I know that some people think that this place is a joke, but I've been here myself. It was the creepiest place I have ever been. I didn't think it was going to be as bad and as haunted as everyone said it was, but I get chills just thinking about it.

  • Awesome EVPs. Very talkative weren't they
