Digital environments which facilitate social interaction have the same responsibilities as built environments irl toward their occupants. Engagement between individuals, and the kinds of societal structures they produce collectively, will be largely dependent upon the architecture of the environment they inhabit. It's better to accept that all such environments are inevitably engineered, ideally in a transparent way, than to assume that it will somehow work itself out, possibly through some metaphorical 'ecological' or 'biological' process. Also, unconstrained biology/ecology doesn't have a particularly good record for designing things optimally and with minimum wastage and damage.

  • is that social engineering or social architecture as on TED (forget the exact videos) or books on urban space, etc?

  • @emblemOFbeing Social Architecture is a much better term, (and less provocative)

  • Fred, can't get into YouDoubled right now. Sup?

  • @rozeboosje Working ok for me. Maybe the server was overloaded or something. I might have to migrate it to a more robust host at some point.

  • "+1'd by1 people"...LOL YouTube seems to be using social engineering again.

YouTube is not a round table where we can all talk as equals. It's a hierarchical podium for celebrities to tell us what's important in life.

  • But sir, placing the amusement next to the sewer is the height of efficiency.

Every time you go to play, you'll have a shitload of fun.

  • What about wiki-fying youtube, so that--as long as all parties consent--videos could be collectively edited and woven into conversations and/or segregated into sub-issues/topics/arguments as conversation. Organize it is a 3d structure too, maybe (with the video clusters navigatable through).

  • I can't think of any social interactions that can't be contrived as social engineering... the term depends upon the naturalistic fallacy IE engineering is unnatural and hence bad.

  • @2bsirius Hmm..Works for me. You appended it to the base YT url? The slash comes after the "m" in "com"

The link won't work for me :(

Not attached as a response because it is slightly askew with respect to focus given your video, and it was made as a response to Loreleila.

  • @Loreleila having only one, too complex to describe here, but however good the intent, intellect and ability of one person, anything which is growing and being developed needs others of near equal stature to keep things balanced imo. I know you intend no manipulations or engineering in any negative way but the term does set alarm bells ringing.
