@freqazoidiac Love your comments. You nailed it. Dave was not prepared for Murray's level of absurdity. No doubt he was a bundle of nerves whereas nothing seems to throw Murray off his game.

LOL! "The kids in the neighborhood ..."

Letterman? "PC"? Politically Correct? This was the guy who dumped a box of eggs mixed with ping-pong balls off the studio building and showed a cab hightailing it away from tearing through a Christo exhibit ...
Plain Crazy.

@xxolympicgirl06 Yeah but it was cut off. :(

This performance informed the show, for 29+ years... wow. To relive the genesis of Letterman is great. Thanks for keeping the video tape intact.

@doggysector Don't know you, but I am sure that realization was one of the best things that could have happened to you. So glad to hear it.

@doggysector Wow another reason to like Letterman. Tom Snyder sucked so bad, thanks Dave for taking over.

does letterman seem pissed?

Wow...back when Paul was sedate....You realize Bill could do this same routine NOW and it would still kill 'em.

Bill Murray wrote the book on how to be a comedian on Lettermans show.
The last two minutes is one of the funniest things I've ever seen! I love Bill Murray... favorite actor, hands down.

I remember this show and it was one of the very first David Letterman shows after Tom Snyder stopped doing his show. This is a classic, it was on Monday night February 2 1982. I fell over laughing with the "new Newton John thing." My girlfriend at the time thought it was stupid. That is when I was pretty sure that my relationship with her was over as this was one of the funniest things in T.V history.
