New York's Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy has confirmed it let go eight associates, along with staff.
The 220-lawyer immigration firm has 17 offices in the US and Europe, plus 14 affiliated offices in Australia, Central America, India and Asia.
One of the offices affected is New York, where four associates were let go. Layoffs in the financial services market, which provides the firm with many employment immigration matters, precipitated the move.
The firm had gross revenues of $247 million. Profits for each of the firm's 42 equity partners average $1.9 million.
There were also cuts in the legal assistant and paralegal ranks, although an exact number was not reported.
The firm will likely freeze hiring until the economic situation improves
