Istanbulâs old Roma district, Sulukule, is to be torn down. Many politicians want to have done with the dilapidated wooden buildings in the shadow of the ancient Byzantine wall. They have offered the residents compensation and want to resettle them outside the city in new estates. Few people realize that the Roma were here on the Bosporus long before the Turks were. Pulling down Sulukule would not only be razing a historical district, but would also rob the Roma of their social cohesion. Many Turkish artists and intellectuals are backing the struggle against demolition.
