From this map, I would make the assumption that the bulk of pilot-in-training's knowledge comes from learning how to avoid other planes in 35,000 feet. I guess being a pilot is not as fun as I once thought it was...

@jnyerere Well, if you are a pilot, you are being separated from other aircraft by a controller. So really as long as they are doing their job, you should be fine concentration on just flying the plane. Also minimum separation standards are 5 miles in En Route airspace. These traffic is primarily commercial flights that have been tracked by the FAA. General aviation pilots may not be on this map. Since they fly using visual flight rules, then they have a primary focus of see-and-avoid.

@xoxoclandestinexoxo that is how the airspace is drawn. Those aren't state lines, but actually the lines of ARTCC boundaries. Check it out on Wikipedia.
