Yes many internet/youtube geniuses have declared him not tough, not technically sound, not this not that. Everyone on the internet somehow knows what went on behind the scenes in wrestling 25 years ago based on the accounts of jealous/jaded/scorned underachievers that do shoot interviews in retirement for a thousand dollars a pop. He was a great entertainer and it should be left at that.

That's true, but I don't see the point in justifying his "quality" by the argument of him being not as bas as in the USA. Granted, those were not your words, but it seemed to me like that was the consensus of western fans discovering his Japan work. If that's not the case with you I apologise for a false assumption.
