Biography: John Pretorius (JPre)
If ever in recent times there was someone who deserves the title of roaming musical ambassador, it is the singer/songwriter/composer John Pretorius. If ever there was someone to symbolize not just events from our recent past but the peaceful metamorphosis that has transcended on our beautiful country, they are his songs. First he wrote a song that made our two presidents dance, Mr. Mandela and Mr. Thabo Mbeki.
Our nation dances, from Manenberg to Mamelodi, a song that became the official election theme, Sekunjalo Kenako, Now Is The Time that impacted on millions of South Africans. To follow he composed the song Free at Last that was to become personal poignancy for Mr. Mandela and many South Africans and touched the innermost parts of many people all over the world, so much so that he was invited to sing on two consecutive occasions at the Martin Luther King celebrations alongside Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles in Atlanta and Washington DC. Free At Last together with a personal endorsement from former President Nelson Mandela was presented to Ace Producer Mr.. Quincy Jones on one of his many visits to South Africa.
John Pretorius passion and childlike enthusiasm for his music has taken him to the lengths and breadths of the globe and he has recorded with the greatest names in the industry. His music encapsulates the bitter past of a divided and racist South Africa as well as the peaceful new South Africa that epitomizes a true democracy that is second to none.
John was mandated by the ANC to travel with their leadership during the 1994, 1999 elections in South Africa to set the stage with his social conscious songs like Free at Last and Sekunjalo Ke Nako Now is the Time.
These songs has reach anthemic status amongst South Africans and has coined him the nick name of Sekunjalo. Johns song Free at Last a duet with the famous Jermaine Jackson has marked the end of a three hundred year reign of apartheid and the beginning of a new era for the African continent. The song is dedicated to Mr.. Nelson Mandela, freedom fighter and father of the African continent.
Following hot after free at last, John composed his new song, Im an African to celebrate 10 years of democracy in south Africa. This talented former high-school teacher has formed a tight camaraderie with Mr.. Mandela, president Thabo Mbeki, Cyril Ramaphosa and Mr. Ahmed Khatrada here in South Africa and the likes of the famous Jacksons, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Steven Seagal and comedian Chris tucker internationally.
What makes this South African unique may be the fact that all of his accomplishments have not altered his sensitivity and concern for the welfare of others or his intense caring and love for his fellow South Africans, family and friends and especially the most vulnerable of our society, the children. John is a gifted teacher, musician, composer, singer and patriot who believes that the human spirit will always reign victoriously. God bless Africa! Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika!
