Are Americans their own worst enemy?
I teach English here in Milan, Italy.
I had a discussion with one of my students - a prominent, well-educated professional- who has never traveled to the US because he is afraid of the violence that's portrayed in film and television media.
We often acquire (and absorb) stereotypes from media rather than from our own direct experience with the groups being stereotyped. Stereotypical images convince audiences of the "truth" of the stereotype by placing it in a carefully controlled context in which there is a measure of truth to the image.

@Zecalran I think there is always an element of truth in stereotypes, but we all know an element does not tell the whole story! (I agree with you too)

@LeSaMilano 1% Truth 99% bullshit! :) I say this because when we get to know the story of others the stereotypes or what previously perceived/thought of them doesn't counts or matters anymore. I think u know what I mean. Btw don't keep dogs that farts they are not funny! ;)
