the celestial life is the title of the song that ends this wonderful symphony by Mahler, it's a jew of musicality, exquisite and innocent

Not weird at all. I have had the privilege of performing 3 choral concerts under Ashkenazy - 2 (Prokofiev & Shostakovich) with Czech Phil. and 1 (Ravel Daphnis & Chloe) with NHK Orchestra seen in this video. He is absolutely clear, a performer's dream. Besides, it's the countless hours of preparation and artistic shaping that make the concert - during the live concert the conductor and musicians already know each other's nuanced gestures and their meanings perfectly. Baton is superfluous.

I know from personal experience what you are talking about - during rehearsals the conductor talks about what he or she wants and you learn to "read" his/her intentions in the conducting style. It all comes together during rehearsal. The performance is the reward. I really admire Ashkenazy, and I'm happy that you got to sing for him. The best music comes from true humanitarians like Ashkenazy. I still say his technique is weird! :-)

It's really beautiful, I also like to hear something in german, because as for classic I prefer italian, but Mahler is good!
And her voice so authentic...
