Here, I demonstrate a Challenging Pat Martino lick taken from a solo I have worked on. *This lick is plucked out of Pat's version of the John Coltrane classic "impressions." It appears on his 1974 album Consciousness. Listen around the 0.47 mark and you might be able to catch it.

  • I like how you've demonstrated the scalar patterns from Pat's book in a new, practical lick :-)

  • @peterguitar55 Thanx. Which book of Pat's are you referencing?

  • This lesson is a Jazz epiphany for me. Excellent lesson. Thanks.

  • Thank you soooo much. I've had a recent infatuation with Martino-style chromatic based solos with lots of passing notes but never knew there was term for it.

  • Terrific lick by the man !! well played ,like the strat too!~

  • nice

  • May I say thanks very much for this lesson - wonderful lick. Am I right in saying that this example is in the key of Ab? The first chords sound more like an Am9 to Bb9 to me rather than Am7, Bb7 as stated on the pdf.

I wonder whether you could give us a lesson on your picking technique for this lick whether up and down strokes, hammer ons, pull offs etc. I seem to get the licks off OK but still haven't mastered that picking technique to really get that fast bebop groove going. Thank you.

  • Thanks for this! It's one thing to play it, but quite another to improvise this sort of melodic development. Pat is so incredible.

  • thanks for the lesson.

  • your fucking unreal man seriously !
