This is a trombone solo I had on my senior recital as played by Matt Luhn and Charlie Berggren.
Program notes: At the beginning of my junior year, I thought it would be a good exercise to write for an instrument that I am relatively familiar with. The harmonic vocabulary for this piece is based on a Wagner technique in which he tonicized different pitch members of a triad. I used a minor/major F7 chord (whose pitches are F, Ab, C, and E), which means that the keys you will hear in this composition are F minor, Ab minor, C minor, and E minor. I also incorporated an extended technique in which the pianist holds down the piano pedal while the trombonist plays into the keyboard causing the strings of the piano to resonate. You will hear this during the cadenza in the middle of the piece. My thanks to Matt for premiering this solo in 2007 and for agreeing to a repeat performance today.
